Now, I'm not saying that the rules arn't good. I just think they should be treated more like guidelines, than rules, even in the school/education area.
It's not that I don't want to follow the rules. But i don't want to follow the idea that society makes us believe that we need rules. We don't. All we need is our imagination and a tool to bring it out.
So this is for all the artists, who are like me.
We tried the rules, and even playfully flirted with them for a while. But really, that was it: playful flirting.
Please, share your opinion. Just keep in mind, that I didn't make this to appeal to all artists. Some artists LOVE the rules. I just think that my art, should be made the way I want it to be. Without someone over my shoulder, saying that I need to change it. Also keep in mind, I come at this as a student in High School Art, so i am approaching this as someone in the education system right now. Not as life in general.

I agree completely! I understand that as an artist one is taught basic guidelines/rules concerning what makes common successful pieces. Except, I find it unfair when one generates a piece and asks for suggestions from another fellow artist who seems to automatically apply those rules/guidelines towards the piece as if it's some sort of formula that calculates the success rate of the work. As if venturing to much further from the set guideline the piece becomes deemed as just a personal piece that wouldn't be considered proper art to others. I've had professors who tore my work apart because they felt some of the things I did , didn't follow the guidelines in addition to saying "before you can break the rules you must know them. . ." I'm aware of some things that could work against your piece such as color combinations and placement, but. . .I don't know if I'm getting my point across. I totally have noticed tho it seems people push for you to be creative and original yet at the same time expect something common and norm. I'm sure of course when dealing with clients you must follow the rules/guidelines but when you have freedom of choice towards creating your vision or displaying a different approach to an idea why not go for it, you can't please everyone. Just have to keep in mind who are you doing the work for, what is expected and do I have as much creative license to do as I please without being ask to redevelop my entire idea based off of some set format. Bah. Yay for rules, but some may need some updating and how will the creation of other good ideas be known if people don't try something different?
